Getting ready to go

Biologists don't travel light when they are getting ready to go to the field. Compounding that is the constant shuffling of gear between trunks to make sure they stay below airline weight limits. Experience playing Tetris is useful training for packing when going to the field.

On the way

Moving this much equipment between terminals does pose some logistical problems. We won't even mention what excess baggage on 33 trunks over our limit was.

Once there

For most of the trip we used two vehicles: the GAZ, a converted Russian troop transport with room for 3 people and most of our gear, and a Russian minibus, which you see lots of in Mongolia.

Minor transportation problems

I'm not saying the GAZ broke down a lot, but...

Alternative transportation

They camel may have had bad breath, but at least he didn't break down.

Misc.

How many biologists does it take to read a map? Waiting for the gas truck to show up.
