Ulaan Nuur
This is a seasonally dry lakebed surrounded by Gobi steppe vegetation.
the soil is very soft and sandy, and the main vegetation is a large woody shrub,
Nitraria sibirica, producing edible red berries. These shrubs greatly
influence the topology of the area by holding soil and creating large
mounds up to a meter in height and several meters in diameter.
These mounds create the only relief in the area and are also used by
Dipus sagitta for burrow sites.
Several animals were captured by hand when they froze in our headlights as we were driving through this region. MammalsDesert hamster- Phodopus roborovskiiNorthern three-toed jerboa- Dipus sagitta Parasites |
